Subjunctive

suggest, recommend, insist, demand, propose, request gibi fiillerden sonra that + özne + yalın fiil gelir: I suggest that he be on time. Özne he/she olsa bile -s yok, ana fiil geçmişte olsa bile fiil yalın: They demanded that the manager resign.

Olumsuzda do/does kullanılmaz, sadece not + yalın fiil: We recommend that she not travel alone. — “that she doesn't travel” ✗.

Türkçedeki “-mesini öneririm” yapısı Türkleri “I suggest him to go” ✗ demeye iter. suggest + kişi + to yanlıştır: I suggest that he go ✓.

Günlük İngiliz İngilizcesinde “I suggest that he goes” da duyulur; ama resmî ve akademik metinlerde subjunctive (yalın fiil) beklenir.

• I suggest that he be on time.

  Zamanında gelmesini öneririm.

• She insisted that he leave immediately.

  Hemen gitmesinde ısrar etti.

• We recommend that she not travel alone.

  Yalnız seyahat etmemesini tavsiye ediyoruz.

It is essential / vital / crucial / important / imperative / necessary that + özne + yalın fiil: It's vital that she attend the meeting. It is essential that every employee follow the rules.

Burada da will kullanılmaz, -s eklenmez, olumsuzda not + yalın fiil: It's crucial that he not be late again.

Daha sade bir alternatif for + kişi + to + V1: It's important for him to rest. (Dinlenmesi önemli.) Bu yapı konuşmada daha yaygındır.

Türkçede “…-mesi önemli / şart” kalıbı tek cümledir. İngilizcede ya that + subjunctive ya da for + kişi + to seçmelisin; ikisini karıştırma: “It's important that him to rest” ✗.

• It's vital that she attend the meeting.

  Toplantıya katılması hayati önem taşıyor.

• It is essential that the report be finished today.

  Raporun bugün bitirilmesi şart.

• It's important for him to rest.

  Dinlenmesi önemli.

İngiliz İngilizcesinde subjunctive yerine çoğu zaman that + should + yalın fiil kullanılır: I suggest that he should see a doctor. It's vital that she should attend. Buradaki should “-meli” tavsiyesi değil, subjunctive'in yerini tutan bir yardımcıdır.

Yani üç seçenek var: he see (resmî, Amerikan), he should see (İngiliz), he sees (günlük İngiliz). Sınavda ve resmî yazıda ilk ikisi güvenlidir.

suggest ve recommend -ing ile de kullanılır: I suggest taking a taxi. — “I suggest to take” ✗ ve “She suggested us to go” ✗ Türklerin en sık hatalarındandır.

• I suggest that he should see a doctor.

  Bir doktora görünmesini öneririm.

• She insisted that we should stay for dinner.

  Akşam yemeğine kalmamızda ısrar etti.

• I suggest going by train.

  Trenle gitmeyi öneririm.

were-subjunctive: if, I wish, if only, as if / as though'dan sonra hayali durumlar için tüm kişilerde were kullanılır: If I were you… I wish she were here. He talks as if he were the boss. Günlük dilde “was” da duyulur, ama resmî yazıda were beklenir.

Bazı kalıplaşmış ifadeler eski subjunctive'i korur ve fiil yalın kalır: So be it (öyle olsun), Come what may (ne olursa olsun), God save the King (Tanrı kralı korusun), Long live the Republic (Yaşasın Cumhuriyet), Heaven forbid (Allah korusun).

Be that as it may = “öyle olsa bile / her ne kadar öyle olsa da”: karşı tarafı kabul edip itiraz etmenin resmî yoludur. Suffice it to say = “şu kadarını söyleyeyim”.

Bu kalıplar donmuştur, değiştirilmez: “God saves the King” ✗, “Long lives…” ✗.

• I wish she were here.

  Keşke burada olsa.

• Be that as it may, we still need more data.

  Öyle olsa bile hâlâ daha fazla veriye ihtiyacımız var.

• Come what may, we will finish this project.

  Ne olursa olsun bu projeyi bitireceğiz.

It's time / It's high time / It's about time + özne + past simple = “artık …-mesinin vakti geldi (hatta geçiyor)”: It's high time you got a job. Anlam şimdi ya da gelecek, ama fiil geçmiş zamandadır. “It's time you get” ✗.

Genel bir ifade için It's time + to V1 ya da It's time for + kişi + to V1: It's time to go. It's time for us to leave.

would rather + V1 = kendi tercihin: I'd rather stay at home. Başka birinin ne yapmasını tercih ettiğini söylüyorsan would rather + özne + past: I'd rather you stayed at home. (Evde kalmanı tercih ederim.)

Olumsuz: I'd rather you didn't smoke here (don't ✗). Geçmişe dair pişmanlıkta past perfect: I'd rather you hadn't told him.

• It's high time you got a job.

  Artık bir iş bulmanın vakti geldi de geçiyor.

• I'd rather stay at home tonight.

  Bu akşam evde kalmayı tercih ederim.

• I'd rather you didn't smoke here.

  Burada sigara içmemeni tercih ederim.

suggest / insist / demand / recommend that ve It's vital / essential that → özne + yalın fiil (ya da İngiliz İngilizcesinde should + yalın fiil). Olumsuz: not + V1.

were (If I were, I wish she were), kalıplar (So be it, Be that as it may), It's high time + past, would rather + özne + past.

• The manager insisted that he check the report again.

  Müdür raporu tekrar kontrol etmesinde ısrar etti.

• It's time we went home.

  Eve gitme vaktimiz geldi.

• If I were in charge, things would change.

  Yetkili ben olsam işler değişirdi.
